For reading and anything you need to remember, music usually makes things slightly worse, and music with lyrics makes them worst of all. The effect is small rather than dramatic, so it won’t ruin a study session, but there’s no good evidence that music improves learning. Where music does earn its place is on repetitive tasks, on days when it’s the difference between studying and not studying, and as a way of covering up noise you can’t control.
Here’s what the research shows, including the famous claim that doesn’t survive scrutiny.
What does research say about studying with music? #
The most useful single source is a 2018 Bayesian meta-analysis of 65 studies on auditory distraction during reading, by Martin Vasilev, Julie Kirkby and Bernhard Angele in Perspectives on Psychological Science. Their finding was that background noise, speech and music all had a small but reliably detrimental effect on reading performance.
Three details from it are worth carrying around:
- Intelligible speech and lyrical music caused the biggest disruption. Words compete with words. If you’re reading or writing, anything with a comprehensible vocal is the worst choice available.
- Plain noise was reliably distracting too. So the problem isn’t only that lyrics hijack your language processing. Sound as such carries a cost.
- The disruption to reading comprehension didn’t generally differ between adults and children. “I’m used to it” isn’t well supported as a defence.
Small effects are still worth acting on when the fix is free. Turning music off for the reading part of a session costs nothing.
Isn’t listening to classical music supposed to make you smarter? #
No. The “Mozart effect” grew out of a small 1993 study into a claim that listening to Mozart raises intelligence, and it became one of the most repeated ideas in popular psychology.
It didn’t hold up. A 2010 meta-analysis in Intelligence by Jakob Pietschnig, Martin Voracek and Anton Formann, published under the title Mozart effect–Shmozart effect: A meta-analysis, found no reliable support for a specific Mozart effect on performance.
If classical music helps you, it’s because you enjoy it and it covers other noise, not because Mozart does something to your brain that Radiohead doesn’t.
When might music actually help? #
The honest answer is that the evidence for benefits is thinner than the evidence for costs, and most of what’s claimed is about mood rather than learning. A few situations where it’s defensible:
- Repetitive, low-language tasks. Copying up notes, organising files, drawing diagrams, sorting flashcards. There’s little language processing to compete with.
- Covering worse noise. A shared house, a café, a sibling watching videos. Steady music is less disruptive than intermittent speech you can make out.
- Getting started. If putting on a specific playlist is the ritual that gets you in the chair, that’s worth more than a small comprehension penalty. Something you’ll only listen to while working is a version of temptation bundling, which we cover in how to stop procrastinating.
- Exercise and breaks. No reason to avoid it away from the desk.

Two practical rules follow. Keep the volume low enough that you stop noticing it, and pick something you’ve heard many times, because a new album is a thing you’ll listen to rather than a background.
Should you match the music to the task? #
This is where most people get the best result. Rather than deciding whether you’re “a music person”, decide per task.
- Reading, essays, learning new material, revision you need to remember: silence or steady noise.
- Problem sets where the work is procedural: instrumental music is usually fine.
- Copying, formatting, organising, admin: play whatever you like.
- Timed past papers: match the exam. You won’t have headphones in the hall, so practising with them trains the wrong conditions.
That last point matters more than people expect. If every practice session happens with music on, sitting in a silent exam room is an unfamiliar condition on the day that counts.
What about the phone the music is playing on? #
This is the trap. Music is one of the most common reasons a phone stays on the desk during study, and then the phone is on the desk. Changing a track is the most common way a focused session ends, because the app you open to skip a song is one tap from everything else.
Some practical separation:
- Queue a long playlist or album before you start, so there’s nothing to change.
- Play music from a different device where possible: a laptop, a speaker, an old phone.
- Use a physical volume control or headphone controls rather than unlocking the phone.
If your phone has to be the music player and the timer, make leaving cost something.
