How to Make a Revision Timetable That Works

Work backwards from your exam dates, break each subject into topics rather than hours, spread every topic across several separate days instead of one long session, and leave at least a fifth of the plan empty for catching up. A timetable fails when it’s too detailed to follow and too full to recover from.

Here’s a seven-step method, a sample week, and the mistakes that make most revision timetables collapse by day four.

Step 1: List the exams and the dates #

Write every exam, its date and its length. This is the skeleton, and it’s the only part that isn’t negotiable. A subject with an exam on 12 May needs its revision finished before 12 May, which sounds obvious until you see how many timetables are built around equal time for every subject regardless of when the papers fall.

Step 2: Break each subject into topics #

Not “biology”. A list like “enzymes, respiration, photosynthesis, transport in plants, genetics, homeostasis”. Use the syllabus or specification from your exam board, because that’s what the paper is written from.

Aim for topics small enough to cover in one session of 30 to 50 minutes. If a topic needs three hours, it’s actually three topics.

Step 3: Rate each topic red, amber or green #

Be honest, since this is the step that decides where your time goes. Red means you couldn’t answer a question on it today. Green means you could. Most students discover that a third of their list is green and doesn’t need the attention they were about to give it.

Red topics get three passes in the plan. Amber get two. Green get one, late on, as a check.

Step 4: Count the sessions you really have #

Not hours: sessions. Count the days between now and your first exam, multiply by the number of blocks you’ll genuinely do on a normal day (two on a school day, four or five on a free day is realistic for most people), and subtract days you know are gone.

That number is usually smaller than expected, and it’s better to find out now than in week three. If your topic list needs 120 sessions and you have 70, you’re going to cut something, and it should be a decision rather than an accident.

Step 5: Spread each subject across the weeks #

This is the step that makes the difference, and it’s the one most timetables get wrong by dedicating whole days to single subjects.

Spacing learning across days beats concentrating it. A meta-analysis by Cepeda and colleagues (2006) synthesised 839 assessments of distributed practice from 317 experiments, and the pattern favours spaced learning episodes over massed ones. A major review of ten study techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) rated distributed practice and practice testing as the two high-utility techniques out of ten, with rereading and highlighting rated low.

In practice: a topic you revise on Monday should come back the following week and again a fortnight later, not get four hours on one Saturday and then nothing.

Step 6: Write topics into slots, not hours #

A slot in your timetable should say “Chem: rates of reaction, past paper Q” rather than “Chemistry 2-4pm”. Naming the task removes the ten minutes of deciding that starts every vague session, and it means you know whether the session succeeded.

Give each slot an active task where you can: practice questions, a past paper section, recall from blank paper, marking yesterday’s answers. A slot that says “read chapter 6” will be spent reading chapter 6 while thinking about something else.

Step 7: Leave a fifth of it empty #

Build in one catch-up slot a day and one catch-up day a week. Something will run long, you’ll get ill, a topic will turn out to be harder than you thought. A timetable with no slack is one bad afternoon away from being abandoned.

A sample revision week #

This assumes school days plus a free weekend, five weeks out from exams. Session lengths are deliberately short on school nights.

Notice that no subject disappears for more than two days, marking gets its own slot, and two blocks are catch-up.

Why do most revision timetables fail? #

  • Colour-coding instead of revising. An afternoon making a beautiful timetable feels productive and teaches you nothing. Give yourself 45 minutes to build it.
  • No slack. One missed session cascades into a plan you’re permanently behind on, and a plan you’re behind on gets abandoned.
  • Equal time for every subject. Time should follow weakness and exam dates, not fairness.
  • Blocks that are too long. Four-hour slots look serious and rarely survive contact with a Tuesday. Choose a length you finish cleanly; there’s a method in the best Pomodoro length for studying.
  • Passive tasks. “Read notes” is the default filler and the least useful thing on the list.
  • No breaks written in. If breaks aren’t in the plan, they happen when something tempts you, which is exactly the wrong moment.

How do you tell whether the timetable is working? #

Check two things at the end of each week. Did the sessions happen? And are the red topics turning amber?

The second question is the real one. A timetable can be followed perfectly and still not work if the sessions are passive. Test yourself on a red topic without your notes. If you can’t produce the answer, the hours you spent on it didn’t do what you hoped, and the next pass should be practice questions rather than more reading.

Keeping an honest record of the first question is easier with something that logs it for you. For major exams, six to eight weeks of structured revision is a common target, with lighter review through the year. The more useful question is how many sessions your topic list needs. Count that first, then count backwards from the exam date to find your start.

How many hours a day should a revision timetable have? #

On school days, two to three hours is realistic. On free days, five to six hours of genuine study is a hard day for most people, and twelve-hour timetables are fiction. Plan the number you’ll hit on an average day, not a heroic one.

Should I revise one subject a day? #
