Your phone makes it hard to focus in three ways. Notifications pull your attention even when you ignore them. Checking chops your work into fragments that each need a fresh start. And, more controversially, simply having the phone in sight may use up some of your mental capacity. The most reliable fix is distance: silence it and put it somewhere you can’t see or reach.
Here’s what the research actually shows, including the parts that haven’t held up as well as the headlines suggested.
Do notifications hurt focus even if you ignore them? #
Yes, and this is the best-supported finding in the area. In a 2015 experiment published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, Cary Stothart and colleagues had people do a demanding attention task while their phones received calls or texts they didn’t answer. Just receiving the notification disrupted performance, and the size of the effect was comparable to what they saw when people actually used their phones.
The researchers’ explanation is that a buzz or chime sets off task-irrelevant thoughts: who’s that, what do they want, should I reply. You don’t have to pick up the phone for your mind to leave the task. That fits with how much our minds wander anyway. A Harvard study of 2,250 people found minds were wandering 46.9% of the time, and a notification gives yours somewhere specific to go.
Silent mode helps with sound, but a lit screen or a vibration on the desk still counts as a notification. Do Not Disturb, a Focus mode, or turning notifications off for most apps does more.
Does just having your phone nearby make you less sharp? #
Maybe, a little. This is the “brain drain” idea, and it’s worth knowing both sides.
In the original study, Adrian Ward and colleagues at the University of Texas at Austin had nearly 800 people take tests of working memory and fluid intelligence. Each person’s phone was either on the desk face down, in a pocket or bag, or in another room. People whose phones were in another room did best, pocket-or-bag was in the middle, and desk was worst. It didn’t matter whether the phone was on or off. Ward’s explanation was that resisting the urge to think about your phone takes some of your limited mental resources.
The follow-up research is mixed:
- A preregistered direct replication by Ruiz Pardo and Minda (2022) found no difference between phone locations on either working memory or attention.
- A study by Christodoulou and Roussos (2025) also found that phone presence didn’t significantly impair attention.
- A 2023 meta-analysis of 22 studies (Böttger and colleagues) found a small negative effect overall, but noted that not all kinds of thinking were equally affected.
So treat “your phone’s presence makes you dumber” as unproven. Moving your phone out of sight is still worth doing, because it’s free and it deals with notifications and temptation at the same time.
Why does checking your phone cost more than the time it takes? #
A quick check looks cheap: ten seconds, then back to work. The cost is in the switch, not the check.
Switching tasks has a measurable cost. In classic experiments by Rubinstein, Meyer and Evans (2001), people were slower when alternating between tasks than when repeating one, and the cost grew as the tasks got more complex. Your coursework or report is a lot more complex than the lab tasks.
Your attention doesn’t all come back at once. Management researcher Sophie Leroy (2009) found that when people switch away from an unfinished task, part of their attention stays stuck on it, and their performance on the next task suffers. She called this “attention residue”. Check a group chat mid-essay and some of your mind stays in the chat.
Interrupted work is more stressful. In a 2008 experiment by Gloria Mark, Daniela Gudith and Ulrich Klocke, people who were interrupted actually finished their tasks faster, with no drop in quality, but they reported more stress, frustration, time pressure and effort. They were compensating by rushing.
You’ll often see a claim that it takes 23 minutes to refocus after an interruption. It’s usually attributed to Mark, but it isn’t the finding of that 2008 paper, and we haven’t been able to trace it to a published measurement, so we don’t rely on it. Why is it so hard to stop checking? #
Because most checks aren’t decisions. Picking up the phone is fast, and it pays off just often enough (a message you wanted, something funny) that the habit keeps itself going. Each check is so small it never feels like a choice.
The best evidence for how automatic this is comes from a 2023 study in PNAS. Researchers gave 280 people an app called one sec that adds a short pause before chosen apps open. Over six weeks, use of those apps fell by 57%, and in 36% of attempts people closed the app once the pause appeared. A large share of opens were apparently things people didn’t want to do once they noticed they were doing them.
Do phone breaks help or hurt? #
They help less than other breaks. In a 2019 experiment with 414 participants, Kang and Kurtzberg had people solve anagrams, take a short break, then solve more. Those who spent the break on a phone took longer and solved fewer anagrams in the second half than people who took the same break on paper or on a computer. A break is meant to let your attention recover, and the phone didn’t allow that as well.

If you use your phone as your timer, the phone has to stay nearby, so make leaving the timer cost something. Work Capy does exactly that. Because checking is a habit, triggered by boredom, difficulty or small pauses in your work, and it rewards you often enough to keep going. Adding a small delay or cost to each check, or putting the phone out of reach, interrupts the automatic part so you get a moment to choose.
